About Cannabis in Illinois
Illinois legalized recreational cannabis through the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, which went into effect on January 1, 2020. The state allows both medical and adult-use cannabis sales at licensed dispensaries.
Illinois residents aged 21 and older can purchase up to 30 grams (one ounce) of cannabis flower, 5 grams of cannabis concentrate, or 500 milligrams of THC in cannabis-infused products per transaction. Non-residents can purchase up to 15 grams (half-ounce) of cannabis flower, 2.5 grams of concentrate, or 250 milligrams of THC in infused products.
Medical cannabis patients must hold a valid Illinois medical cannabis card and be registered with a specific dispensary. The Medical Cannabis Patient Program allows patients to possess up to 2.5 ounces (71 grams) of cannabis during any 14-day period. Eligible medical patients may also grow up to five cannabis plants at home, although home cultivation is not permitted for recreational users.
Cannabis consumption is permitted in private residences (with landlord approval for renters) and at licensed dispensary lounges. Public consumption, including in parks, on sidewalks, in vehicles, and on school property, is prohibited.
Illinois Dispensaries FAQ
Recreational and medical marijuana is now available in Illinois. Find answers below to common questions about our Illinois dispensary locations, cannabis regulations, medical cards, and how to order online.
Is marijuana legal in Illinois?
Yes, both medical and recreational cannabis are legal in Illinois. The Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act went into effect on January 1, 2020, allowing for the legal sale and use of cannabis for both medical and recreational purposes.
Under Illinois law, individuals over the age of 21 can legally possess and consume cannabis for recreational purposes. They can purchase up to 30 grams of cannabis flower, 5 grams of cannabis concentrate, or 500 milligrams of THC-infused products (such as edibles) from licensed dispensaries.
For medical cannabis patients, the law allows for the use of cannabis to treat a wide range of qualifying medical conditions. Patients must have a written certification from a physician to obtain medical cannabis, and they can purchase up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis every two weeks from licensed dispensaries. It is also legal for eligible medical cannabis patients to grow up to five cannabis plants at home, although home cultivation is not permitted for recreational users.
How much marijuana is it legal to possess in Illinois?
For medical use, patients may possess up to 2.5 ounces (71 grams) of marijuana during any 14-day period. Patients should consult their doctor for a recommendation to possess more cannabis if needed.
For recreational use, adults aged 21 and older are allowed to possess up to 30 grams (roughly one ounce) of cannabis flower, 5 grams of cannabis concentrate, or 500 milligrams of THC in a cannabis-infused product. These possession limits apply in both public and private spaces.
Public consumption of marijuana is prohibited, including smoking, vaping, and consuming edibles on sidewalks, streets, parks, and in vehicles. Marijuana use is only allowed in private residences (subject to landlord approval for renters) and at licensed dispensary lounges. Possessing marijuana in amounts exceeding the legal limits, selling marijuana, or possessing it with intent to distribute remains illegal and can result in criminal charges.
Are there any limitations on the amount of cannabis that can be purchased at the dispensary?
Yes. According to Illinois state law, Illinois residents can purchase up to 30 grams (one ounce) of marijuana flower, 5 grams of extract or concentrate, and 500 mg of THC in an infused product (edibles), per day at one store. Non-residents can purchase 15 grams (half-ounce) of marijuana flower, 2.5 grams of extract or concentrate, and 250 mg of THC in edibles. These totals are cumulative, so you can purchase up to the limit of each form of cannabis at the same time.

What are the payment methods available at the Illinois dispensaries?
Debit cards and cash are accepted at all of our Illinois dispensary locations. An ATM is available on-site at each location.
Can I use my medical marijuana card at multiple dispensary locations?
No, the State of Illinois requires you to register with the dispensary where you will shop. However, you can change your dispensary at any time by visiting the Illinois Medical Cannabis Patient Registry.
Can I give away my medical cannabis to someone else?
No, medical cannabis patients cannot share their medical cannabis with someone else, even another medical cannabis patient. However, caregivers can purchase and share cannabis with their designated patients only.
How does a caregiver purchase a product for a medical patient?
A caregiver can assist you with the use of medical cannabis as well as purchase cannabis for you. A caregiver must have a valid caregiver card in order to purchase on behalf of a medical cannabis patient with or without the patient present. If you want a caregiver to purchase a cannabis product, we recommend designating a caregiver when you first apply for a medical cannabis card.
Once you are registered with the state as a caregiver, you can place an order on behalf of your medical patient and pick up in the dispensary or curbside on behalf of your patient. The caregiver account will be unified through the patient’s medical card number.

Where can I smoke with my medical card in Illinois?
Patients with a medical cannabis card are permitted to smoke in the privacy of their own home. If you rent, you may use medical cannabis in your unit provided your landlord permits it. Patients may also consume medical cannabis at dispensary lounges that allow it (not all dispensaries offer this option, so check with your local dispensary before visiting).
Smoking cannabis is prohibited in public areas including parks, restaurants, bars, sidewalks, and streets. It is also prohibited on school property, on school buses, in vehicles, and in any correctional or detention facility.
Will insurance cover my medical marijuana in Illinois?
No. Medical insurance does not cover medical marijuana in Illinois. Marijuana remains a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law, and since Medicare and Medicaid are federal programs, they cannot cover medical cannabis. Private insurance companies are also not required to cover the cost of medical marijuana, even in states where it is legal.
Patients who use medical marijuana must be prepared to pay out of pocket. Some patients may qualify for financial assistance programs offered by dispensaries or non-profit organizations. Consult with your healthcare provider to determine if medical cannabis is the right treatment option for your condition.
